These have no session to be anchored to, so they refresh every 15 minutes right through the US day this block stays live even when the tables below are frozen at the pre-open snapshot. Change is measured from the prior settle, the same baseline all session. VIX is excluded on purpose: it only prints during US cash hours, so pre-open it would show the prior day's reading as if it were live.

Echo is the part of the move the prior Nasdaq session already explains. Residual is what is left, and Z scores it against that market's own history. These sessions close before the US opens, so they are settled numbers.

Europe opens after Asia closes, so its Echo is measured against both the prior US session and the same-day Asian tape. Without that second term, a European market merely following Asia down would look like new information. The residual here is therefore the move beyond what the US and Asia together imply. These sessions are still early, and Z compares a partial move against full-day dispersion, so it understates magnitude. Read the Session column: a residual 8% of the way through the day is a much larger surprise than the Z suggests.
How to read this. Over 995 US sessions, the Asia composite z forecasts the opening gap (r2 0.17) and essentially nothing about the session after it (r2 0.006). On the 15 worst Asia nights in that sample, 11 US sessions rose from the open, and the worst continuation lower was 0.56%. A bad overnight tape is already in the gap by the time you can act on it. This page is context for the day ahead, not an exit signal.
